Welcome back! Love being here with you. Thank you so much for the positive feedback about the show, I absolutely love hearing it.
I got this on a call the other day with someone who wanted to work with me:
“Where is this coming from that is telling me to eat things I don’t want to eat?”
We call this desire to eat things we don’t want to many different things- cravings, emotional eating, stress eating, hormones, my husband won’t stop buying junk, but the way she put this I thought perfectly summed it
“Where is this desire to eat things I don’t actually want to eat coming from?”
It’s your brain. Always and only your brain.
My clients know this well, they study it with me and work on it daily.
But when you don’t know it, it feels like a mystery.
And the truth is, no one is talking about it!
Why?
Because most of the weight loss advice out there centers on a list of foods you should eat…not teaching you how to look at your brain.
So we think the list of foods could be the solution to us finishing off a carton of ice cream on the couch every night….even though we know it’s not, because we have tried that before and it didn’t work.
So today, I am going to share with you where your desire to eat things “you don’t want to eat” is coming from
And what to do about it
And the “what to do about it” has nothing to do with distracting yourself, simply saying you won’t eat the foods you have been overeating anymore, or finding more willpower or motivation
This is brain wiring and it’s the only thing that works when you are eating things you don’t want to be eating
If you don’t know my story, ive been a nutritionist for over 10 years.
I got my degree
Diets didnt work for my clients
Quit my job to start my own business
Started eating things I didn’t want to eat
Could not figure it out- seemed like the biggest mystery to me
At times if i had been given one wish it would have been not be plagued with that desire anymore.
I also felt alone, is anyone else dealing with this?
I tried the diets
Ultimately realized the answer was in the brain
Today i am so glad I had that struggle because i was able to use it to help thousands of people lose weight and really understand why we are facing a weight problem
And that brings us to our topic today.
Your desire to eat things you don’t want to eat comes from your brain.
You have to go to the source if you want to fix it
Knowledge is power, knowing this is the first step to making a change in your brain, to losing weight for good.
You have been taught that the reason you’re eating things you don’t want to is because you are missing the right diet, because you’re life is too stressful, because you don’t work out enough, because your hormones are off, because you turned 50, because you got a divorce, because there are too many snacks in the house, because you retired, because you’re bored, because you don’t have enough accountability, because you’re not restrictive enough, because you lost your motivation…the list goes on
And none of those are the reason why you are eating things you don’t want to eat.
You are because of your brain- because you have two parts of your brain. The part that wants to lose weight and the part that wants the pleasure from food.
The part that wants pleasure from food is winning right now. It is in control. It is running the show, getting it’s pleasure whenever it wants because it knows how to manipulate you. It knows what to say and how to create the emotions in you to get what it wants.
And the key to ending the battle is knowing how to put the other part of your brain, the part that wants to lose weight, back in control
I teach my clients how to do this with a 3 step process.
Those three steps are:
1. Make a pla
2. Stick to the plan
3. Evaluate
Sticking the plan, step 2, is where you learn how to get in control when you start craving something, when you start emotional eating, when you start eating something you don’t want to eat.
You learn how to take your power back, how to get that part of your brain that is telling you to eat to shut up.
It is life changing
It is the difference between dieting until you run of out of willpower and losing weight and keep it off for the rest of your life
It is the difference between counting calories for the rest of your life and genuinely not desiring to eat foods you used to not be able to resist.
So, take these 3 steps and begin putting them into action in your life. Start acknowledging when your brains is not wanting to stick to the plan- what are you thinking, what emotions are you feeling? How can you process through those and get to the other side where you genuinely don’t want to eat the thing anymore/
This it the key to long term weight loss that is effortless and consistent and calm. See you next episode
